I Believe in God Because......

Linda Andrus, our Licensed Unity Teacher found this article to be a unique perspective on the word because and asked Mack if we could print it. He graciously agreed.

I believe in God because.....

This statement sounds like something definitive is on its way...but simply because I can’t explain my belief or God, all I can say is: God is. And as I deepen my understanding of what God is, my belief becomes more clearly expressed as: My belief is. Ending a sentence with because creates a pause, or an opening for some type of explanation. The explanation can be as simple as an elusive feeling, or as detailed as a dissertation. When I say I believe in God because, I have created a pause or space, no more no less. In this deeply quiet pause thoughts of explanation disappear; as words become feelings that travel beyond belief, to a place of knowing that our minds are larger than the container that we have laboriously built to house our separate thoughts. In this recognition of a larger sense of mind, a feeling emerges, giving us more of an awakening to the roots of causation. Understanding causation becomes as simple as knowing that every mind is searching for connection and finds it when joined in a loving thought. In this light, every thought that is not loving represents some distorted effect that in time will be meaningless. In a wonderful play of words, the word because turns from a word that is commonly used as a precursor for a reason to a word that when hyphenated, becomes an all-encompassing thought: Be-Cause. Suddenly this word that has no meaning by itself changes from something anticipated to giving us a sense of direction that suggests meaning. Understanding cause as loving thought needs no explanation, as the experience of love speaks directly to the core of our being. We live in an ocean of words coming in like the tide, that grab our attention, then leave us with effects that many times seem out of our control. Allowing our minds to flow with the tide is a rhythm much like breathing. Finding that moment in time between what the tide has brought us, and what we are putting back into the world is an instant that goes mostly unnoticed. The opportunity to pause in our breath for just an instant is beautifully analogous to the exhaustion of a wave where there is nothing more coming in... giving us the time we need in each breath to use the energy of the receding wave to release any or all disruptive thoughts. Importantly, as we release thoughts that have taken us captive, we find ourselves with a peaceful sense of timelessness that deeply feels like we have joined an ocean of loving thought.
